PERCEPTION - IDEA - CONCEPT- IDENTITY

The Rubric
“Area of Study: Belonging” is a conceptual study. It is an understanding of a text as a concept, an idea and a perception. These perceptions are shaped from an individual’s personal, social, cultural and historical context, which allow for the emergence of connections and relationships with people, places, groups, communities and the larger world. In order to analyse a text in terms of its exploration of belonging, one must account for experiences and the notions of identity, relationships, acceptance and understanding within the text, and therefore explore the text perceives the concept and significance of belonging. Texts are able to present perceptions of belonging that enrich and challenge a responder's understanding of the concept. They reflect attitudes, and the evolution of belonging overtime. Through the employment of language forms, features, modes and structures, as well as the implementation of perspectives, the composer is able to engage with the audience; feel a sense of acceptance and affinity to the persona, or even a sentiment of rejection and hostility from the figurative environment.

Composed by Jhumpa Lahiri, “The Namesake” tells the story of an “American-Born-Confused-Deshi”, Gogol Ganguli, who is caught between the conflicting American and Bengali cultures and traditions. In an attempt to discover his identity and sense of belonging, he must learn to understand and accept his family for who they are and where they come from.
